There's a theory I'm too lazy to look up and find that the sea people were just desperate hoards from the collapsed nations elsewhere in the world at the time. Nation A collapses, a bunch of people become pirates/nomadic thieves, attack nation B, which is already on the verge of collapse, a lot of nation B joins the new pirate group, and it spreads from there. Desperate people desperately seeking survival via violence and theft.

So, probably not long. Just need a few good sized collapsing nations and nature will take its course. No one likes starving, and starving people are desperate people. And desperate people will find a way to survive, even if it means going against their own morals and ethics.

Historians now also believe that the 'Völkerwanderung' of Germanic tribes moving during the growing deterioration of the Roman empire was a similar process - desperate people ganging up and trying to eat.

Oh no you missed them! They were here last week. Very nice chaps, they came with cool presents: some beautiful seashells, funny nudibranchs and polished rocks. We had a lot of fun, and they stayed for the evening barbecue. They had to leave early though, to wipe out one third of the country's population and erase our entire civilisation from history. I couldn't catch where they live unfortunately - I would have loved to pay them a visit.
